5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Internship

June 10, 2010

1. Build a relationship with your boss and co-workers.

I find the best way to learn from people is by getting to know them. Creating a friendly relationship is crucial for enjoying your internship. It is also helpful to have a relationship you can feel comfortable asking questions and advice. Plus, once you begin to understand others and how they work, you can begin to absorb everything from them.

2. Ask questions.

If you have ever worked with me, you know I ask a million questions. Why? Because that is how you learn! You need to ask to get answers. If I do not know how to complete a task, ask how. No one is judging, if anything they are happy you want to learn.

3. Network.

Generate contacts by reaching out to everyone at your internship. If you go to an event, give out business cards and take business cards. Just put yourself out there. It will help when you are looking for a job.

4. Take on big projects.

The only way to truly learn is by doing. Ask for bigger projects. You definitely are capable of anything as long as you try. Make sure your employers know that you to do more.

5. Apply what you learned.

Take what you learned on the road. You know you had a successful internship when you use everything you learned at another internship or a job.
